Panel dentist or dentist of choice? An Interview with Dr. Dimitar Raynov provides more info!

As a young dentist, besides the build-up of a strong patient roster, the decision as to whether to become a panel dentist or a dentist of choice is among the most important ones when starting a career in the dental space as a new professional.

To help our dentist members with this decision, we got together with Dr. Raynov and asked him about how he thought about this decision prior to, during, and now after he has opened his new and modern dentist practice in the 9th district in Vienna.

More information about our highest and best-rated dentist member can be found inside the profile of Dr. Raynov.

Interview with Dr. Raynov: Differences between a career as a panel dentist and a career as a dentist of choice – what is better for a young dentist?

Question: As a dentist who is practicing in Vienna and who has gathered experience both as a dentist of choice and with local insurers, why did you decide against collaborating with insurers and instead opted for building up a practice as a dentist of choice? Was it a decision driven by timing, financial, or organizational reasons?

  • Answer: From a time management perspective, as a dentist who is practicing in Vienna and a dentist of choice, I can better organize my appointments and optimally manage my time.

Question: Did you make the above-mentioned decision right away once you started practicing in Vienna or did you chose the path of a dentist of choice a little later down the road?

  • Answer: Right away.

Question: Which factors were most important for your decision?

  • Answer: As a dentist of choice, I can always spend as much time as I need with my patients.

Question: Are you considering going after insurer contracts in the future or will you remain a dentist of choice for good?

  • Answer: I could eventually consider working with the smaller insurers like SVS, KFA and BVAEB.

Question: What would you recommend to young dentists who are currently working on building up their own practice regarding the dentist of choice vs. panel dentist question? Is it advisable for every new dentist to get an insurance contract as soon as possible or should a career as dentist of choice come first?

  • Answer: A young dentist can not immediately close contracts with insurers – at least 5 years need to pass.

Question: From a longer-term perspective, how do you see the field of dentistry developing? Will young dentists apply for insurance contracts in droves like in the past or will an increasingly large proportion of these new dentists opt for a career as dentists of choice?

  • Answer: No. There already are dentists who are deciding to cancel their contracts with insurers since their service coverage is continuously shrinking.

Again, thanks very much to Dr. Raynov for this interview!
