What is an initial dental examination?

Finding a dentist that one can trust is probably a top priority for virtually every child nowadays because whenever a young patient has established a longer-term relationship and a successful treatment history with a dentist, his or her doubts and nervousness level are significantly lower. However, sometimes something unexpected may happen that separates a young patient from his or her trusted dentist – maybe the patient has to move to another city, maybe the dentist has to relocate himself and his entire practice, maybe the dentist decides to go into retirement after a long and successful career. Though such cases are unfortunate, they happen all the time and force many young patients and their parents to look for a new dentist to put their trust in.

An initial medical examination (or “checkup”) is the first visit that a young patient makes to a dentist and serves the purpose of appraising the patient’s oral hygiene and health. Afterwards, the dentist and the parents of the young patient can have an informed discussion about specific treatment needs and treatment time frames. An initial medical examination usually encompasses several clearly-defined steps:

  • Anamnesis (medical history) – Discussion of past illnesses, past treatments, and reasons for past and current misalignments of teeth and/or the jaw
  • X-Rays – Panoramic and bitewing x-rays
  • Dental Health Assessment – Based on a careful and thorough inspection of the oral cavity and all taken x-rays
  • Personal Treatment Plan – Face-to-Face conversation about all necessary therapy steps and procedures, associated costs, and appointment scheduling for your child

When does my child need an initial dental examination?

Each time a patient goes to see a new dentist, the two parties first need to get to know each other. These initial meetings happen in the context of initial dental examinations.

How much does an initial dental examination for my child cost?

Though the costs of an initial dental examination for a child can vary from dentist to dentist, the following guidelines can provide useful information prior to an appointment:
  • Initial Dental Examination – Child (up to 6 Years): roughly EUR 156
  • Initial Dental Examination – Child (7–14 Years): roughly EUR 117
