What are invisible retainers (e.g., Invisalign)?

An invisible retainer like Invisalign is the most cutting edge treatment option for orthodontic conditions and can nowadays be used to correct up to 95% of all possible cases of dental misalignment in adults and teenagers. This modern treatment is an often favored alternative to braces and involves several pairs of reusable splints (so-called “Aligners”) which are custom-made for each individual patient and slowly but certainly coax misaligned teeth into their proper positions. The most frequently cited advantages of aligner therapy like Invisalign therapy over conventional braces or retainers are:
  • Highly-aesthetic and almost completely invisible splints (Aligners)
  • Very gentle on the wearer’s teeth
  • High wearing comfort
  • Pain-free insertion and wearing
Once a patient decides to go with Invisalign, he or she works closely with a dentist on developing a custom-tailored, individual treatment plan, which usually involves the following steps:
  • Diagnosis and Planning – Creation of a detailed treatment plan for custom-made, see-through Invisalign Aligners via software support based on patient-specific photos, x-rays, and dental imprints
  • Delivery – A few weeks after the initial diagnosis visit, a patient receives the first pair of transparent aligners which can be worn for up to two weeks at day and at night and which only need to be taken out prior to eating, drinking, or regular dental hygiene
  • Check-In Visits – After using up the first two-week set of aligners, a patient can take several aligner pairs home to cut down the number of dentist visits to one every 6 to 10 weeks
  • Retention – To preserve the positive end result of the aligner therapy, patients receive so-called “retention splints” for longer-term use
In general, an aligner treatment like an Invisalign treatment lasts for about one year – however, more complex cases may require longer treatment durations.

When do I need aligners like Invisalign?

In general, orthodontic treatments for children happen between the ages of 10 and 13 after either a dentist or the parents notice clear signs of dental misalignment. The most substantial advantage of aligners like Invisalign over conventional braces is its significantly more aesthetic and flexible therapy approach. On the contrary to braces made out of metal and plastic and pieced together by wires, aligners are much easier and more convenient to insert and remove and are also almost completely invisible to the eye. This allows Invisalign patients to go on with their daily activities without the fear of any awkward moments caused by conventional and highly-visible retainers. Additionally, Invisalign offers not one but two treatment options to teenagers. For some, the same Invisalign therapy that is used for adults is perfectly appropriate and capable of delivering the desired results. For others who are still waiting for all of their permanent teeth to fully grow out, the so-called InvisalignTeen option is the optimal way to go. Invisalign Teen Aligners are made out of the same material as those for adults and utilize the same mode and mechanism of action.

How much do aligners like Invisalign cost?

The costs of Invisalign depend on treatment duration and the type of equipment used. Nevertheless, the following guidelines can provide useful information prior to an appointment:
  • Treatment Plan and Analysis: EUR 380
  • Invisalign (Adults and Children): EUR 5,000 all-in price (irrespective of treatment duration)
  • Invisalign Lite: EUR 3,000 all-in price (treatment duration of 28 weeks)
  • Retention (e.g., with Vivera Retainer): EUR 550
Aligners other than invisalign can cost slightly more or less than the above-stated orientation prices. Nowadays, several Austrian state insurers already cover a part of Invisalign’s all-in costs in the form of set annual reimbursement amounts ranging from EUR 300 up to EUR 1,000. The exact reimbursement amount that a given insurer will make for an Invisalign therapy varies on a case-by-case (patient-by-patient) basis. Private insurers pay for Invisalign treatment costs at least partially and sometimes even in full dependent on the exact terms of their insurance contracts with individual patients.
