What is laser therapy?

Laser therapies are among the most significant advancements in the field of medicine and are by now in use in many different medical specialties, such as dermatology or various surgical specialty areas. Recently, laser therapy is also used in dental medicine as a minimally-invasive therapy option that does not come into contact with the treated tissue in the way a drill would.

The largest benefit of a laser treatment is that it is completely pain-free for patients and, thus, makes the use of all sorts of sedation measures unnecessary. Additionally, this treatment type is exceptionally versatile, as it can be used for a large number of treatments including the treatment of tooth decay, periodontosis, and dental root inflammations. Even in higher-effort and higher-risk areas, such as implantology or oral surgery, dental lasers can be used effectively and they can extend even into the hardest-to-reach areas of the oral cavity.

Since dental laser treatments are a very novel treatment method, they should only be used by specially-trained expert personnel, including some dentists, who focus on treatments that would otherwise be more invasive, as well as by oral surgeons.

What are the advantages of laser therapy ?

Some of the already mentioned advantages of this novel treatment method are part of the following list of benefits associated with dental laser therapy:

  • No need for sedation/anesthesia
  • High-precision settings that allow very thorough dental work
  • No irritations of tissue around the treated location
  • Reduction of all sorts of bacterial infections
  • No, or minimal bleeding
  • Slight-to-no pain and swelling after a treatment
  • Faster and more thorough wound healing
  • Shorter treatment times than with traditional treatment methods
  • Use of fewer medications / antibiotics after the treatment

What types of laser therapy devices are currently on the market?

To date, there are three types of laser therapy in use in dental medicine:

Soft-Laser (Cold laser): Produces no heat and stimulates the treated tissue during the treatment, which makes it the most minimally-invasive option among the three. Though this laser type is often used for periodontitis treatment, the efficacy of soft lasers has not yet been proven by clinical studies.

Hard-Laser: The laser type with the highest output among the three, which makes it ideal for cutting and removing soft tissue. This ability is particularly useful in the realm of oral surgery and is, thus, used by oral surgeons quite frequently.

MID-Laser: Very similar to the soft-laser, but with a higher output.

How are lasers used in a dental practice?

Dental lasers are, as already mentioned, very versatile and can, thus, be used for a large number of treatments and in a large number of specialties, including:
  • Tooth decay / caries removal
  • Periodontitis treatment
  • Dental root canal
  • Laser oral surgery
  • Laser implantology

How much does a treatment with a dental laser cost?

Insurers in Austria only pay for standard treatments, such as amalgam fillings or x-rays in periodical intervals. This is why the costs of a laser treatment must be born by the patients out of their own pockets or, if they have private insurance policies, will be reimbursed by those private insurers based on the rates on which they pre-agreed with the patient when he or she purchased the policy.

Depending on use (e.g., tooth decay treatment, dental root canal, etc.), dental laser therapy can have different costs and can vary between EUR 20 per tooth and EUR 250 per therapy.
