What is implantology?

Implantology is the specialty area within the field of dental medicine that, by now for over 25 years, focuses on the insertion of dental implants into the jaw bones of a patient in an effort to replace missing teeth. Over time, the development of dental implants has continued to progress and has, as of today, produced several very promising tooth replacement options which are routinely utilized by dental implantologists. A dental implant is essentially a replacement for a tooth root and can be used to remedy a single tooth gap as well as to help a patient replace several missing teeth to help them with repairing their masticatory system. In most cases, these implants are made out of titanium and, therefore, do not cause allergic reactions. Recently, dental care professionals have also introduced dental implants that are made of other materials such as zirconium or ceramic, all of which are fully bio-compatible, non-allergenic, and long-lasting.

When do I need a dental implant?

As already mentioned, dental implants are used to fill tooth gaps by replacing the missing teeth. One of the most significant advantages of dental implants compared to other forms of tooth replacements is the fact that no other, healthy teeth need to be worked on in order to install a dental implant successfully. This makes dental implants one of the more benign forms of tooth replacement. After a successful insertion of an implant and the placement of a ceramic crown atop of it, a patient can again eat and chew just as if he or she had never lost a tooth in the first place. Consequently, consumption of all sorts of foods like bread, fruits, legumes, and others is not a problem at all. Additionally, dental implants are an ideal solution even from an aesthetic point of view because the white, ceramic dental crowns that are placed on top of dental implants, are virtually indistinguishable visually from healthy teeth.

How does the insertion of a dental implant work?

Fortunately, the insertion of dental implants only requires a fairly brief and routine surgical procedure which merely takes a few minutes and which is performed directly in the dental practice and virtually pain-free under local anesthesia. For patients with dentophobia, dentists may induce half-sleep or use general anesthesia to help the patient avoid any negative and scary memories of the procedure. After the insertion of the implant into the jaw bone, a patient should expect a healing period of 3-6 months during which the newly-installed implant bonds with its surrounding bone mass (also called osseointegration) to provide optimal support for the ceramic crown that is mounted atop the implant afterwards. During this healing period, patients usually wear provisional crowns so that the new implant does not ruin the aesthetic appearance of their smiles. As already mentioned, once the implant has successfully bonded with the jaw bone, the dentist places either a custom-made dental crown or a custom-made dental bridge atop of it. After this happens, the patient can again freely eat, chew, and smile.

With patients who have very solid bone mass, dentists can also use a computer-assisted implantation method. The significant advantage of this method is that it is minimally-invasive, which significantly reduces any post-operative discomfort and also reduces the likelihood of complications during the subsequent healing process.

What are alternatives for a dental implant?
Dental implants are a quite popular tooth replacement option nowadays because they can easily replace loosely-fitting dental prosthetics. This is particularly helpful for patients who are experiencing issues with loose prosthetics or for whom these devices cause an odd taste in their mouths. Other complications that may occur are aesthetic issues and occasional gum inflammations, which can be caused by slipping dental prosthetics.

Should dentist and patient still decide against a dental implant, a carefully crafted dental prosthetic is the best alternative option, closely followed by a dental bridge which, unfortunately, requires the grinding down of surrounding healthy teeth.

How much does a dental implant cost?
The cost of a dental implant depends directly on which tooth it is intended to replace because the replacement of larger teeth requires a lengthier insertion procedure and the crowns for such implants require the use of more materials. The total cost of a dental implant that a patient has to pay for out of pocket also depends on what portion of the cost an individual patient's insurance reimburses. Typically, insurance reimbursements start at several hundred Euros and can even reach several thousand Euros in more severe cases.
