What is general anesthesia at the dental office?
Many patients nowadays are scared of the dentist and are looking for a way to get their teeth treated in the most painless and anxiety-free way. An anesthesiologist can help with that and often collaborates with dentists on sedating their patients with carefully dosed sleep medications to make them enter a sleep-like state throughout the dental procedure and allow them to leave the dental office carefree thereafter. The patient can then decide on the spot whether to proceed to treatment on the same day or whether to return for treatment during a follow-up appointment.Afterwards comes the treatment itself, which, thanks to the general anesthesia, is not only completely pain-free but also fully unnoticed, given that the administered anesthetic suppresses the patient’s central nervous system during the procedure.
Lastly, one more key point to remember: after the dental procedure is completed, the patient may indeed leave the dental practice right away. However, this may only happen with another person accompanying the patient for safety reasons. Driving on the same day is out of the question for the patient.
How much does general anesthesia cost at the dental office?
The exact costs of general anesthesia depend heavily on the treatment that is performed and should therefore be discussed with the dentist prior to starting any procedure to avoid surprises. In general, patients should expect to pay several hundred Euros (in the range of EUR 200 – 1,500).In some cases, insurance companies do cover general anesthesia – for example for kids up to the age of 6 of for disabled people. Patients with proven dentophobia can also receive financial help from insurance companies.
