What is a Dental X-Ray?

In the past, dentists relied on traditional x-ray machines that used analog x-ray films and produces oftentimes not too accurate or detailed x-ray photographs of patients’ teeth and jaws to support better diagnoses. Nowadays, many dentists have switched to more modern machines – e.g., Digital Volume Tomography (DVT) machines – that can almost momentarily produce three-dimensional, digital photos of teeth and jaws. These three-dimensional photos are exceptionally detailed and clear and facilitate very focused and detailed diagnoses even in difficult cases that allow dentists to swiftly compile personalized treatment plans for their patients. The most significant advantages of these new technologies are, among others:
  • Higher degree of certainty of diagnoses and lower treatment risks
  • Better x-ray photo quality
  • Lower radiation exposure
  • Immediate availability of x-ray photos on the computer/tablet
  • Ability to immediately work with and send x-ray photos via PC/tablet to other dentists
Modern x-ray machines are capable of detecting even the smallest damages not only to teeth surfaces but also to tooth roots and the surrounding gums and can also clearly visualize the locations of crucial nerve endings prior to surgical procedures.

When do I need a Dental X-Ray?

In general, a dental x-ray is advisable during at least one of the two or more dental check-up visits that dentists recommend to their patients in order to detect any potential dental problems as early as possible and to inform the selection of the most appropriate treatment. Additionally, dental x-rays can be enormously helpful in the following situations and with the following procedures:

How much does a Dental X-Ray cost?

The costs of x-ray photographs (e.g., bitewing radiographs, panorama x-ray) are generally covered by state/government insurance at least partially. Thus, patients often pay for the out-of-pocket costs for these services via supplemental insurance policies. Though the costs of x-ray photos vary from dentist to dentist and depend significantly on their type, the following guideline can provide useful information prior to an appointment:
  • Panorama X-Ray Photo: starting at EUR 88
  • Single X-Ray Photo: roughly EUR 18
