What is a dental check-up visit?

Once a patient finds a dentist whom he or she can trust, those annoying, yet unavoidable dentist visits become significantly less stressful and scary. Though even the most pain-free and relaxing dentist visit can never compete with a lazy afternoon in a deck chair in the warm early summer sun, these regular check-ups are important cornerstones of a successful oral hygiene for patients of all ages.

The goal of a dental check-up visit (or dental follow up or prevention visit) is to provide a regular opportunity for appraisal of the quality of a patient’s oral hygiene and the health of his or her teeth, jaw, and gums to diagnose and treat any potential problems as early as possible. A check-up visit is also important for patients who already suffer from dental problems in order to track disease progression, assess the effectiveness of past and current treatments, and potentially recommend additional treatments, if appropriate. Normally, dental check-up visits involve the following few steps:

  • Dental Health Assessment – Examination of teeth and the full oral cavity with a stomatoscope, hardness test for dental enamel, quality and integrity test for existing fillings and tooth replacements
  • Gum Health Assessment – Examination of the periodontium and the depth of gum pockets (gingival pockets) via a periodontal probe to check for periodontitis
  • Professional Dental Cleaning – Removal of any built-up dental calculus
  • X-Rays – Panoramic and bitewing x-rays
  • Personal Treatment Plan – Face-to-Face conversation about all necessary therapy steps and procedures, associated costs, and appointment scheduling

When do I need a dental check-up visit?

Generally, dentists recommend to their patients to come in for dental check-up visits every 6 months to, at the very least, get a professional tooth cleaning and remove any built-up dental calculus. For patients who have just undergone invasive or longer-lasting procedures (e.g., dental implants, Invisalign Teen therapy, etc.), regular check-up visits are advisable in even shorter time increments.

How much does a dental check-up visit cost?

Though the costs of a dental check-up visit can vary from dentist to dentist, the following guideline can provide useful information prior to an appointment:
  • Dental Check Up – Adult (Recall Patient): roughly EUR 23
