Info Tidbit: When and where should you brush your teeth and can you skip it?

Certainly a question that many people have asked – especially the second part of it regarding skipping the annoying brushing and rinsing of the mouth. To get right to the point: one should never skip brushing one's teeth except in extreme cases when no dental care equipment is available or reachable or when damage to the mouth and oral cavity make dental care impossible. To ensure proper oral hygiene, you can prepare a portable dental care kit (some airlines even provide such kits to passengers on longer flights) consisting of a small toothbrush, a small tube of toothpaste, and some dental floss. Add to that a small bottle of water for mouth rinsing and voila - all barriers to proper dental care are removed, even in more remote areas such as car rest stops. Such small preparations can effectively dispel any excuse regarding skipping routine dental care. 

When and how frequently should you brush your teeth?

Just like the parents say at home, most dentists recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day - ideally in the morning and right before going to bed in the evening. Roughly 3 minutes of brushing are enough to do the job and you should always use some dental floss to round things out.

Though some may think that the usual dental care routine in the morning is not needed given that no food is consumed overnight, the nightly build up of acid on top of the teeth is damaging to the dental enamel. So, whether you brush before or after breakfast does not really matter as long as you do it thoroughly. 

Nowadays, an increasing number of dental care professionals have spoken up about the supposed erosion of dental enamel if one brushes right after consuming a meal and have stated that this theory is based on relatively little truth. For many people this is actually not really an issue and should not be used as an excuse to skip brushing after a meal or breakfast.
