Need an emergency dentist on New Years Eve

“Alle Jahre wieder…” is the start of a beloved Austrian winter holiday song that immediately puts listeners into a festive mood and prompts them to happily sing along.

On December 31, 2017, I was also among the many people who had decided to greet the New Year in Vienna’s historic old city center.

The by now legendary “Silvesterpfad” with its many live concerts and sheer endless amounts of Punch and Sekt had, according to Austrian television, again attracted over 700,000 happy and chipper visitors.

Fantastic mood, great music, yummy drinks, and awesome people. Definitely not the time or place to even waste a second on thinking about a dentist.

Oops. With all the festivities around me, my cap just decided to fly off my head, so let’s quickly pick it up before too many people trample on it!

As I was about to stand up again, a hand holding a Sekt bottle appeared seemingly out of nowhere on the right side of my face!

Before I could react in any way, I felt that very bottle dig itself into my right cheek and send a sharp, flashing pain through my entire body.

OUTCH!

Too late did the owner of the bottle, a young man who had just been partying hardy, notice me standing up behind him and only fully realized what had happened when he saw me fall back to the ground with blood on my face.

He immediately turned around and supported my friends with helping me back up.

“Oh my god! I am SO sorry!” he must have said 10 or 20 times in a row.

Unfortunately, the damage was already done. One of my front teeth on the right side of my face was broken and, based on the intensity of the pain, would most likely need to be removed.

“Fantastic – dentist search instead of awesomeness.” is what I thought without realizing how long it would actually take me to find a dentist on New Year’s Eve.

First, I called my family dentist. Unfortunately closed over the New Year’s holiday.

Then, per recommendations from my friends, I called three more dental offices. Unfortunately all of them were also closed.

As a last-ditch effort, I googled for dental practices that were open on New Year’s Eve but to no avail.

Eventually, I decided to just go to the emergency room and, while a dentist was on duty, I still had to wait for several hours before he was free and ready to see me.

“Unbelievable how many people have to deal with similar tooth-related mishaps on New Year’s Eve!”

The emergency dentist carefully treated the remnant of my tooth as well as he could at that point in time and I ended up visiting my family dentist after the holiday for a complete tooth reconstruction.

So, all’s well that ends well but New Year’s Eve was ruined.

There’s a saying in Austria: “Shards bring luck!” – and if that saying also covers tooth shards, then I should be very fortunate in the year 2018.

Happy new year
